Switching Is Common — But Do It Right

The telehealth GLP-1 market is fluid. Patients switch providers for many reasons: better pricing, supply reliability, service quality, insurance changes, or simply wanting more comprehensive care. This is your right as a patient, and it is often a smart move.

But switching GLP-1 providers is more complex than changing a subscription service. Your medication is a controlled substance with specific dosing requirements, titration history, and continuity-of-care implications. A poorly managed transition can result in treatment gaps, dose restarts, or lost medical records. Here is how to do it properly.

Before You Switch: The Preparation Checklist

• Request your complete medical records from your current provider. This includes your initial health assessment, lab results, medication history, titration schedule, and any clinical notes. You have a legal right to these records. Request them in writing (email is fine) and allow 1-2 weeks for processing.
• Document your current medication and dose. Know exactly what you are taking (semaglutide vs. tirzepatide, compounded vs. brand-name), your current dose, and how long you have been at that dose. Your new provider needs this to continue treatment without resetting your titration.
• Check your remaining medication supply. Time your switch so that you have at least 2-3 weeks of medication on hand. This provides a buffer if the new provider's onboarding takes longer than expected.
• Verify the new provider's pharmacy. Ask the new provider which compounding pharmacy they use, whether it is LegitScript-certified, and whether it is a 503A or 503B facility. If you are on brand-name medication, confirm they can prescribe and the pharmacy can fill it.
• Check insurance compatibility. If your current provider handles insurance billing, confirm that the new provider accepts your plan and can manage prior authorizations for your specific medication.

During the Switch: Continuity Matters

• Share your records proactively. Do not assume your new provider will contact your old one. Upload or email your medical records, lab results, and medication history directly to the new provider during onboarding.
• Clarify the medication source. If your old provider used compounded semaglutide from Pharmacy A and your new provider uses compounded semaglutide from Pharmacy B, the formulation may be slightly different (different concentration, different injection volume). Your new provider should explain any changes.
• Confirm shipping timeline. Ask how long it takes for the new provider to process your prescription and ship medication after your initial consultation. Some providers ship within 48 hours; others take 7-10 days. Plan accordingly to avoid a gap.
• Cancel your old subscription. Do not cancel your current provider until you have received medication from the new one and confirmed it is correct. Most telehealth GLP-1 providers operate on a subscription model — know your cancellation terms and avoid being billed twice.

After the Switch: First-Month Monitoring

• Confirm the medication you received matches what was prescribed (correct drug, correct dose, correct quantity)
• Note any differences in how the medication looks, feels, or performs compared to your previous source
• Schedule a follow-up with the new provider within the first month to confirm the transition is going smoothly
• If you experience unexpected side effects or feel the medication is less effective, report it immediately — it could indicate a formulation difference worth investigating
